Summit Pointe Restaurant Hosts 2013 Installation of Officers and Directors
On Thursday, February 21, the Society held its annual installation dinner at the Summit Pointe Restaurant. Milpitas Mayor Jose Esteves (far left in photo) conducted the swearing-in ceremony for the 2013 Society Officers and Board of Directors shown below (left to right in photo): Steve Munzel, Archives and Landmarks and Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Commission Liaison; Harriett McGuire, Historian; Lela Ehardt, Secretary; Ann Zeise, Publicity; Kraig Bunnell, Treasurer; Joanne Souza, Hospitality; Catherine Pelizzari, Vice President and Publications; Thelma Bridges, Special Events, and Roger Skuse, President. Not present: Mabel Mattos, Membership.

After the ceremony, Paul Bernal, California Superior Court Judge and President of the Santa Clara Chapter of the California Pioneers, gave an illuminating and well- researched account of the tragic life of Zacarias Berreyesa, on whose property the New Almaden Quicksilver Mine was found and whose family ended up completely stripped of all claims and profits of the mine. The photo on the left shows Roger Skuse with Judge Bernal and Mayor Esteves at the dinner.

It is still there! Do come to our meeting this coming Wednesday, November 14th, 7 PM in the library auditorium, and hear some stories about it. I just posted more about the meeting on this site. The old school house is on Bill Hare's property near the intersection of Calaveras Road and Felter Road. When the historic park is developed just north of the Milpitas Library, the plan is to move it there and use as a city museum. Come be a part of this exciting time in our history group.

The Milpitas Historical Society conducted its annual Community Tour on June 30 and visited some new as well as some familiar tour locations .While the date kept the tour from finishing up at the Big Dog Winery this year, the tour did include a new and detailed presentation of the building, grounds, and history of the Higuera Adobe.

Tour members also learned about historic buildings in the old center of town along Main Street, including the sites of the first store and the first hotel in Milpitas, and heard the story of the restaurant, now “Red Chillies” (on the corner of Main Street and Serra Way), that was once Smith’s Corner and then Campbell’s Corner.

This is all very interesting to me, as "Uncle Billy" is my great uncle; his sister Annie (Gibson) is my grandmother. Sadly, although his name was legend in my family - my father absolutely worshiped him - very little lore survives. Regarding Billy's wagon train journey west: It was prompted by the spillage of "Bloody Kansas" into western Missouri, causing the many Burnett families living there to fear for their lives. Billy's mother, Clarinda, was a Janes (spelled "Jeans" back in Missouri). Several of her family (including her brother, Jim, the captain of the party) traveled with the Burnetts , likewise settling in Milpitas.
